Through computer simulations, Sumitomo Rubber aims to adjust the shape of its tires to reduce energy consumption. In one new model, it has narrowed the tread width in the tire's shoulder section to even out contact pressure with the road surface.
"Advancing developments for EVs, which sometimes require tires to perform under severe conditions, may also lead to improved tire performance for [combustion] engine cars," a Sumitomo spokesperson said.
Kyoto-based Nissin Manufacturing faces a bigger challenge. Its main product is a combustion engine component called a rocker arm. "We have been thinking about what we have to do next," executive officer Takayuki Otsuki told Nikkei.
Nissin has partnered with Canadian startup Inmotive, which has developed lightweight powertrain technology that it says can improve the performance of EVs. Last year, Suzuki Motor bought a stake in Inmotive and is working with the Canadian company on a new EV transmission system.
"It is not a good choice to do [the EV transition] on your own," Otsuki said. As Inmotive lacks its own factories, Nissin may ultimately take the lead in producing the new transmissions by applying its know-how in precision manufacturing.
Tatebayashi Moulding (TMC), based in Japan's rural Gunma Prefecture, has tied its fate even more decisively to a partnership. Since 2010, it has operated as a subsidiary of BYD, the Chinese carmaker vying with Tesla to be the world's largest manufacturer of EVs.
"If TMC hadn't joined BYD group, the company would have been in trouble," president Yukio Kawamura told Nikkei. "After entering BYD group, the number of employees increased by 20%, to around 120."
TMC's main product is steel molds used to form car body sections. Kawamura said that working with BYD influenced TMC's production process, driving it to install new quality inspection equipment and to implement new designs more quickly.
With BYD rapidly rising up the ranks of the world's largest carmakers, Kawamura sees a bright future for TMC. "I hope TMC expands its manufacturing scale to be able to accept more orders," he said.

Ptmind, a Sino-Japanese company founded in 2010, has worked with top brands like Muji, L’Oreal, Yohji Yamamoto, and Lion Corporation. Its software-as-a-service product, Ptengine, offers solutions like website analytics, heatmaps, and no-code A/B testing.
Starlink entrusted Ptmind fully with Vivaia’s market expansion in Japan.
“We operate as brother companies,” Li said. “Our operations are completely transparent. Our global team is just 12 people, and we stay updated on each market’s performance daily.”
This trust-based approach was vital. Japan’s market is notoriously difficult to break into, and few Japanese companies are willing to be the first to work with an emerging brand. The country’s business culture emphasizes established relationships and intermediary agents.
Many Chinese companies entering Japan either wait for extended periods or partner with well-connected local firms.
Take Boston Micro Fabrication, for instance. When this Chinese industrial 3D printing firm first entered Japan, it took six months to secure an initial meeting with a Japanese client. Only after two years of producing parts for testing did it finalize a partnership.
Similarly, beauty product brands like Florasis, Flower Knows, and Colorkey have relied on MoldBreaking, a marketing firm operating across Japan and China, to navigate their way into Japan’s competitive market. Guo Xiruo, founder of MoldBreaking, studied in Japan before founding the company, which now works with major Japanese brands like Shiseido and Kao.
In Li’s view, breaking into Japan requires patience and long-term planning. “The Japanese market is more like sand—you have to accumulate it grain by grain to build towers.”
“Opening a physical store in Japan is not about building a financial model—it’s about creating a consumer experience,” Li said. “If you fail to deliver a flawless experience, you won’t earn the consumer’s trust.”
Maintaining consistent pricing across all channels has been a critical aspect of Vivaia’s strategy. “Our online store operates independently, and we maintain the same pricing both online and offline,” Li said. “Aside from holiday promotions, we avoid giving random discounts. We’re focused on building the brand steadily, not chasing short-term sales.”
After two years in Japan, Vivaia has also noticed a wave of copycats, with other brands emulating its marketing language and product positioning to attract customers.
Imitation is an inevitable challenge for any fashion brand.
Before Vivaia made its mark in the European and US markets, flats were already popular among working women. The appeal of recycled plastic bottles and machine-washable designs was common too. But Vivaia succeeded by offering more styles at better prices.

Meet Japan’s brightest research minds at KSAC’s Singapore event this October

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) remains a lofty aspiration, but artificial intelligence itself continues to break new ground. On September 19, Alibaba Group CEO Eddie Wu shared his vision of AI’s future at the Apsara Conference, making it clear that the technology’s reach is set to far exceed current expectations.
Wu opened by asserting that AI’s greatest impact won’t just be about refining digital tools or rolling out the next generation of apps. Instead, it will rewire the physical world. Robotics, he emphasized, is on the cusp of a major breakthrough. Wu predicted that nearly every movable object—whether it’s a factory arm or a household appliance—will soon be an intelligent robot. This transformation, he said, will spark a wave of productivity that spans industries, positioning AI-driven robots to be as common as today’s family car.
The real frontier, according to Wu, isn’t just about AI mimicking human perception but also mastering how to operate and think within the physical world. This shift will unlock new forms of value, with the potential to boost global productivity by tenfold or more.
AI’s influence goes beyond reshaping industries—it’s changing the core of computing itself. For decades, CPUs have been the backbone of computing, but Wu suggested this era is waning. The future, he argued, will be defined by AI-first GPU systems, with nearly all software and hardware integrating AI inference capabilities. It’s a shift that reflects how AI’s needs are overtaking traditional computational demands.
Over half of new computational requirements today stem from AI, and this figure is climbing. Wu acknowledged Alibaba Cloud’s substantial investments in AI computing, but even those efforts are lagging behind the soaring demand. The road ahead will require scalable infrastructure tailored to AI’s needs, touching industries from automotive to biomedicine, and weather forecasting to gaming.
In his address, Wu highlighted the breathtaking speed of AI’s development. In the past 22 months alone, AI has progressed at an unprecedented rate, accelerating faster than any other technological advancement in history. Despite this momentum, he cautioned that the journey has just begun. Achieving true AGI, he warned, will demand significant financial commitment and sustained effort from the global AI community.
A key driver of AI’s recent surge in adoption is the plummeting cost of inference. Wu pointed out that Alibaba’s Bailian platform has slashed inference costs by 97%, making it more affordable for businesses and developers to access advanced AI tools. This price drop has triggered widespread adoption, expanding AI’s reach across industries.
Alibaba’s open-source AI ecosystem is flourishing as a result. The company’s Qwen-2 model, which was made open-source in mid-2023, rapidly became a favorite on Hugging Face. The open-source community has since exploded, with over 50,000 models available and serving more than 6.9 million developers globally. However, Wu emphasized that more powerful and complex models will be essential to fully realize AI’s potential.
Already, AI is learning from vast amounts of data—surpassing human drivers in tasks like autonomous navigation. In the near future, it will extend into intelligent robots that will transform fields such as manufacturing, logistics, and home management.
Wu concluded by reminding companies that technological evolutions are often underestimated at their inception. His message was clear: the future is both exciting and fraught with challenge. Fail to embrace AI’s potential, and companies may find themselves at a serious disadvantage in the years ahead.

BridgeSEA Capital’s 2023 report on Southeast Asia’s toy and game industry estimates that the Southeast Asian market is now worth over RMB 10 billion (USD 1.4 billion), with Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia making up nearly 70% of the total. Mattel, Hasbro, and Lego dominate the market in Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.
The success of legacy IPs shows that Southeast Asia is full of consumers willing to pay for products tied to emotional value. And Chinese toy brands have proven more agile in catering to local tastes.
Brands like Pop Mart are collaborating with local artists or launching Chinese IPs tailored specifically for the region. For instance, Pop Mart signed Thai artist Molly to release the Crybaby series. When Pop Mart opened its third store in Thailand, limited edition Crybaby products were launched, and Molly held an in-store signing event, attracting fans from as far as Malaysia.
Since signing with Pop Mart in 2021, Crybaby has brought in RMB 350 million (USD 49.2 million) in revenue during the first half of this year alone.
52Toys is also incorporating Thai cultural elements into its products. At its Thailand store, Panda Roll, a popular Chinese IP, was dressed in traditional Thai attire. The Prosperity Panghu Plus figurines sold out in a single day.
With such inventive designs and collaborations with classic IPs, trendy toys often carry higher price tags than traditional toys. In China, individual blind boxes typically sell for around RMB 69 (USD 9.7), while full sets can range from RMB 400–800 (USD 56.2–112.4).
Wen Deyi, president of Pop Mart’s international business, said that the company’s products in Thailand are priced about 5–10% higher than in China.
Despite the higher price, Pop Mart and other trendy toy brands continue to thrive, bucking the perception that Southeast Asia’s consumer power is weak.
In fact, Southeast Asia’s youth are the driving force, showing a strong inclination to spend, with little focus on saving.
Judy Qiu, Pop Mart’s head of overseas e-commerce, noted that toy consumers in Southeast Asia are typically aged 20–35, with women making up around 65% of buyers.
While Thailand has been a beacon of success for Chinese toys, the broader Southeast Asian market holds even greater potential.
For one, Thailand’s population is aging—in 2022, over 20% of the population was aged 60 and above, making it a fully aging society with a sluggish birth rate.
Meanwhile, Vietnam and Indonesia, both with populations exceeding 100 million, boast a younger demographic structure, with young people serving as the backbone of their economies. These markets are primed for scale and growth, offering significant opportunities for trendy toy brands.
Thailand’s success may have signaled Southeast Asia’s viability, but it’s just the beginning. A Pop Mart overseas representative told 36Kr that the brand has already opened several stores in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia, and has plans to expand into the Philippines soon.
However, major multinational toy companies already hold a strong foothold in countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Competing against these giants, while expanding beyond the blind box category, will test the resilience and innovation of Chinese toy brands.
