Zero Industries raises USD 3 million in pre-seed funding
Zero Industries, a space technology startup with operations in Japan, has raised USD 3 million in pre-seed funding led by Maezawa Fund. UntroD Capital Japan, NOW, Midtown, and individual investors also participated.
Founded in March this year, the company is developing space-based power infrastructure, beginning with Helios, a proposed service that would use lasers to transmit electricity between satellites.
The system comprises three components: Helios Beam, which would generate solar power in orbit and transmit it using lasers; Helios Cell, a receiving module installed on customers’ satellites; and Helios Grid, a platform designed to coordinate power transmission and monitor electricity delivery.
The technology is intended to reduce satellites’ reliance on onboard solar panels and batteries, potentially freeing up spacecraft capacity for observation equipment, computing, and propulsion systems.
Zero Industries plans to conduct ground-based demonstrations through spring 2027, including kilometer-scale laser transmission tests. It aims to demonstrate power transmission between satellites in 2030, followed by commercial deployment. The company is also conducting joint research with Japan’s Graduate School for the Creation of New Photonics Industries to validate the technology.
