Singapore-based accelerator venture capital firm Accelerating Asia announced the fourth cohort of its flagship 100-day program for pre-Series A startups. The 11 new portfolio companies hail from Singapore, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, and cover ten industries.The firm's co-founder and general partner Amra Naidoo said that for this batch, the firm received a record number of applications from 500 startups from 30 countries. "With just 2% of startups selected, the chosen 11 will be part of our largest cohort and are eligible to receive up to SGD 200,000 (USD 149,000) in investment from our VC fund," she said in a statement.

CarTrade, a Mumbai-based marketplace of new and used cars, is ready to become a unicorn company, those with USD 1 billion-plus valuation, with the recent funding of USD 25 million from Malabar India Fund and IIFL, the regulatory documents filed by the company shows.The 12-year-old firm allotted 1,336, 310 equity shares on March 31 to Malabar and IIFL, and doubled its valuation to USD 967 million (INR 7,100 crore), a report by local media Entrackr said. Prior to this, the company had raised INR 3.2 billion in Series H from existing investors Temasek, Warburg Pincus, and March Capital Partners in June 2020, at a valuation of USD 525 million.

Alibaba stock (HKSE: 9988) advanced as much as 9% in early Monday trading in Hong Kong after the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) imposed a RMB 18.2 billion (USD 2.8 billion) fine on Saturday, a new record since China's anti-monopoly law came into effect in 2008, but a rather small penalty according to analysts and investors.The authorities, which initiated their investigation into the firm in December 2020, concluded that Alibaba had a dominant role in China's domestic online retail market and that from 2015, it used its position to ban merchants on its platform from opening stores or participating in promotions on rival marketplaces, in a so-called "select one out of two" mechanism.

Indonesian startups must start preparing strategies to tap into the country's tier-2 and tier-3 cities as these locations will outpace growth in metropolitan areas, according to a report recently released by venture capital firm Alpha JWC in collaboration with consulting firm Kearney.
