German automaker Volkswagen has teamed up with Chinese electric scooter and bike maker NIU to produce battery-powered kick scooters, Reuters reported Monday, citing German newspaper Die Welt.
The Streetmate model scooter is expected to have a top speed of 45 kilometers per hour (28 miles per hour) and a range of 60 kilometers on a single charge.
In all, NIU sold 339,585 scooters in 2018, marking an increase by 79.2% compared to 2017, according to the company’s annual report. Its net revenues increased by 92.1% year-on-year to RMB 1.48 billion (USD 214.9 million) in 2018.
