Automakers from mainland China are gaining a foothold in Hong Kong's taxi industry, where fleets have consisted overwhelmingly of Toyota Motor vehicles.
Hong Kong was once a gateway to the Chinese mainland for foreign automakers, but it has begun serving as a steppingstone for Chinese carmakers seeking to expand overseas.
Toyota vehicles have been regarded highly for their fuel efficiency and reliability. Over 90% of Hong Kong's roughly 18,000 taxicabs are said to be Toyota vehicles.
But these days, Chinese brands are becoming a common sight on the road.
"I like how quiet it is," said a taxi driver operating a Maxus <a href="/industry/ev">electric vehicle</a> from state-owned SAIC Motor. "Mainland tourists who are used to riding in EVs also enjoy it."
Hong Kong's government is encouraging new players to enter the industry to improve service. Five operators were granted licenses by August to offer an app-based ride service under a new program, each tapping Chinese EVs.
SynCab, for instance, has introduced SAIC cars while Big Boss Taxi uses <a href="/company/gac">GAC</a> vehicles. The five providers are expected to operate a combined 3,500 units.
Though it is unclear how much of each operator's fleet will consist of Chinese EVs, it is clear that the Toyota-dominated industry has reached a turning point.
Chinese vehicles are winning over ordinary drivers in Hong Kong as well, with dedicated showrooms opening one after another. Government data shows that Chinese brands sold around 1,500 vehicles in July, a market share of about 40%, eclipsing the share of less than 30% held by Japanese rivals.
The Hong Kong market has transformed over the past five years. In July 2020, Japanese brands accounted for nearly 70% of sales while Chinese companies made up less than 1%.
Many mainland automakers consider success in Hong Kong, an international city, as the first step in branching out to other markets.
<a href="/company/li-auto">Li Auto</a> opened an overseas business head office in Hong Kong earlier this year. The company is determined to "break into the global market," a senior official said.
Hong Kong is also gaining importance as a place to raise funds for international expansion. State-owned Chery Automobile <a title="" href="https://asia.nikkei.com/business/markets/equities/chinese-state-carmaker-chery-shares-cool-after-hot-hong-kong-debut" target="_blank" rel="noopener">went public</a> on the Hong Kong Exchange in September.
In October, Hong Kong launched a task force for supporting mainland companies entering foreign markets. The group, dubbed the GoGlobal task force, will "work closely with public institutions, professional bodies, chambers of commerce and business organizations," financial secretary Paul Chan said. "This collaborative approach allows us to pool expertise, generate ideas and create powerful synergies."

So far, Whoop holds a clear first-mover advantage with strong user loyalty, while newcomers like Amazfit and Polar are still building traction. Still, as more fans follow celebrity endorsements into the category, many may opt for cheaper, if less precise, alternatives.
Even so, screenless wristbands are unlikely to replace fully featured smartwatches anytime soon. In October this year, Xiaomi’s smart home appliance plant in Wuhan began full production. The factory reportedly produces one high-end air conditioner every 6.5 seconds, conducts full-precision testing on key components, and aims to become an industry leader within five years.
Analysts generally believe Xiaomi is trying to reshape the home appliance sector through online distribution, advanced capabilities, and aggressive pricing. The company used a similar approach to break into the smart television market. Unlike TVs, which are typically purchased in single units per household, air conditioners have higher unit potential, making the segment even more attractive.
Xiaomi’s disclosures show strong momentum. In the second quarter of 2025, its smart home device business posted a gross margin of 22.5%. Xiaomi shipped more than 5.4 million air conditioners, a record high and more than 60% year-on-year growth.
China Galaxy Securities said that in June, Xiaomi briefly overtook Gree in online AC sales before Gree widened the gap again. Gree still leads. According to All View Cloud, Midea led China’s all-channel AC market in July with a 29% revenue share, followed by Gree at 17% and Haier at 15%.
Meanwhile, Dong maintains that Gree’s ACs are “the world’s best,” citing a large patent portfolio supported by mass filings.
R&amp;D spending remains strong. For the first three quarters, Gree raised its R&amp;D investment from RMB 5.4 billion (USD 756 million) last year to RMB 5.62 billion (USD 786.8 million), an increase of 5%.
But in a weaker economic environment, Gree must turn its R&amp;D output into products consumers want to buy. That requires closer engagement with emerging distribution channels and sharper insight into different customer groups.

Gree’s earnings cool while Xiaomi heats up China’s air conditioner race

<a href="/company/tencent">Tencent’s</a> latest quarterly report delivered what investors have come to expect from the company. It posted revenue of RMB 192.87 billion (USD 27 billion) for the third quarter of 2025, up 15% year-on-year (YoY) and slightly ahead of market forecasts. All three core businesses (<a href="/industry/gaming">gaming</a>, advertising, and fintech and enterprise services) recorded varying degrees of growth, supporting steady topline expansion.
Gaming was the strongest performer. Overseas gaming revenue rose 43% from a year earlier. Advertising benefited from higher ad load rates and increased spending by advertisers, while <a href="/industry/ai">artificial intelligence</a> contributed to internal efficiency gains. Fintech and enterprise services were lifted by China’s broader economic recovery as payment and lending activity picked up and cloud demand strengthened.
Profit growth remained solid. Gross profit increased 22% YoY to RMB 108.8 billion (USD 15.2 billion), and non-IFRS operating profit rose 18% to RMB 72.6 billion (USD 10.2 billion). Both metrics have now outpaced revenue growth for 12 consecutive quarters.
Capital expenditure also drew attention. Tencent spent RMB 12.98 billion (USD 1.8 billion) during the quarter, a 24% YoY decline and a reduction of more than 32% from the previous quarter.
On the post-earnings call, management said full-year capital spending for 2025 will come in below its earlier guidance range, although still above 2024 levels. Tencent is one of China’s major AI developers and infrastructure providers, so the decision to scale back spending has cooled some of the recent enthusiasm surrounding domestic AI buildouts.
<h3>A guidance that was modest from the start</h3>
<a href="/company/alibaba">Alibaba</a> has taken a far more aggressive approach. At the beginning of 2025, it announced a RMB 380 billion (USD 53.2 billion) plan to invest in cloud and AI infrastructure over three years, ostensibly the largest such commitment by a Chinese private enterprise.
That set a higher bar for Tencent. Yet at its 2024 earnings conference, Tencent offered only a broad indication of 2025 spending. It expected capital expenditures to reach the “low teens” as a percentage of revenue, or roughly 10–13%.
With Tencent generating about RMB 660 billion (USD 92.4 billion) in 2024 revenue, analysts projected its 2025 capital spending at roughly RMB 90 billion (USD 12.6 billion), about 17% higher than the RMB 76.8 billion (USD 10.8 billion) recorded for 2024. Even then, the guidance fell short of market expectations.
The latest quarterly report confirmed a downward revision, noting only that 2025 spending will exceed 2024 levels. During the prior quarter, Tencent had attributed reduced spending to chip export restrictions, which implied that capital expenditures could rise later in the year. This time, it said its current GPU reserves are sufficient to meet internal needs.
<h3>Alibaba’s aggression versus Tencent’s restraint</h3>
Alibaba has emerged as the most assertive investor in AI infrastructure in China, while other major players, including Tencent and <a href="/company/bytedance">ByteDance</a>, have been more restrained. This contrasts with the intensity of competition among global cloud providers such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft.
The divergence reflects different market structures. Globally, the cloud industry is fragmented. As of the second quarter of 2025, Amazon held 32% of the market, Microsoft 22%, and Google 11%, with growth rates of 17.5%, 39%, and 31.7%, respectively. Microsoft and Google, the smaller players, are gaining ground quickly.
In China, Alibaba Cloud led the first half of 2025 with a 35.8% share, according to Omdia, well ahead of Volcano Engine at 14.8% and <a href="/company/huawei">Huawei</a> Cloud at 13.1%. That dominant position gives Alibaba both the capability and the motivation to invest heavily in AI.
Tencent’s circumstances are different. Its WeChat ecosystem remains a durable social platform that protects its broader business. Alibaba does not have a comparable moat. Its core e-commerce operation faces mounting competition, with <a href="/company/pinduoduo">Pinduoduo</a> concentrating on low-cost products, <a href="/company/jd">JD.com</a> emphasizing premium service, and Douyin expanding rapidly in online retail.
Alibaba once controlled close to 85% of China’s e-commerce market in 2015. By 2024, its share had fallen below 40%. With its core business under sustained pressure and traffic growth slowing, the company is pursuing AI as its next engine of expansion, which explains its aggressive posture.
Tencent is taking a more cautious approach. Its reliance on WeChat makes it less willing to shoulder the fixed costs tied to large-scale AI infrastructure, especially given recent examples of rising expenses in the sector, such as Meta’s. Tencent also faces the challenge of narrowing the gap with Alibaba’s Qwen in the large model race.

Tencent tempers AI spending as profits rise for a twelfth straight quarter

As a debate rages in the automotive sector about whether LiDAR (light detection and ranging) is necessary for autonomous driving, one Chinese company is aiming to use its USD 200 model to put the issue to rest.
Founded in 2014, Hesai Technology specializes in LiDAR that has a wide field of view and high resolution, with its products in use by 24 companies, mainly Chinese automakers. The company ranks first in the global automotive LiDAR market with a 33% share, according to French market research firm Yole Group.
LiDAR's critics, among them <a href="/company/tesla">Tesla</a> CEO Elon Musk, say the technology is too expensive to be commercially viable.
Data from Chinese automaker <a href="/company/li-auto">Li Auto</a>, a Hesai client, shows that vehicles equipped with LiDAR can avoid 90% of fatal accidents on highways and prevent up to 20% of collisions on ordinary roads.
"LiDAR has been proven to be an excellent technology for stopping vehicles before collisions," Li Yifan, Hesai's co-founding CEO, told Nikkei in an interview at the IAA Mobility industry expo in Munich in September.
But its adoption has not yet become widespread due to its price, which is typically over USD 10,000 per unit. "Unless we significantly reduce the price, it will be difficult to install it in all vehicles, and safety will not improve," said Li, who has aimed to cut costs by 99.5%.
In collaboration with major automakers, US chip giant <a href="/company/nvidia">Nvidia</a> and German automotive parts giant Bosch, Hesai began developing a LiDAR unit in 2022 with a price of USD 500. Finding it difficult to reduce the price further, it later switched to in-house production of core components like lasers, receivers and drivers, and has sold over one million units in total.
While significant investments in production facilities increased the overall cost of the process, the company has successfully lowered the price of its new ATX model to USD 200. The product went into mass production this year.
"In-house production offers the advantage of not only reducing costs but also enabling rapid feedback into the design process," Li said. "This allows for the use of superior, lower-cost components."
Musk has criticized LiDAR for its high costs, saying in 2019 that "anyone relying on LiDAR is doomed." He has argued instead that autonomous driving can be achieved solely through advanced cameras. Some Chinese companies like <a href="/industry/ev">electric vehicle</a> startup <a href="/company/xpeng">Xpeng</a> and internet giant <a href="/company/baidu">Baidu</a>, which is developing robotaxis, have also moved away from LiDAR.
Li remains confident. "Nearly 100 automakers and parts suppliers recognize LiDAR as essential technology for protecting lives and are using it," he said. "Some are now saying Musk's view was mistaken. The industry has already reached its conclusion."
For the next generation of LiDAR and beyond, Hesai believes that its price of USD 200 will become the standard for balancing safety and widespread adoption.
The next step is further market penetration. Hesai's LiDAR technology has been adopted by Toyota Motor's joint venture in China, but the majority of customers are still Chinese automakers.
"European automakers consider LiDAR essential for Level 3 autonomous driving," Li said, expressing confidence that adoption will become more widespread. "In recent years, they have begun doing business with Chinese manufacturers possessing advanced technology."
Hesai is also bolstering its production setup, aiming to double output at its two plants in China this year from the 2024 figure to over one million LiDAR units. It also plans to establish its first overseas factory in Southeast Asia, aiming to start production in late 2026 to early 2027.
The company listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange in September to help raise funds for the expansion, raising HKD 4.16 billion (USD 535 million).
"Airbags, once prohibitively expensive, are now standard equipment in all vehicles," Li said. "We want to achieve the same situation with LiDAR."

China LiDAR maker Hesai looks to prove Musk wrong with USD 200 model

According to Chen, smaller AI models can deliver significant impact through stable and efficient performance in domain-specific use cases, while larger models, which excel in general understanding and reasoning, are better suited for exploratory or frontier applications.

Mihoyo loses key Genshin Impact figure as Xie Qiliang steps down

Chinese family entertainment brand Meland has announced its first overseas location will open in Thailand at the end of this year at Siam Paragon, one of Bangkok’s leading commercial complexes. Through its partnership with Siam Piwat, Meland will debut a 5,000-square-meter indoor theme park featuring six themed zones and more than 500 play experiences that together form a large fairytale-inspired environment.
China’s family-oriented theme park industry has expanded rapidly in recent years. Citing a report from Zero Power Intelligence, 36Kr estimates that the market for children’s theme parks will surpass RMB 200 billion (USD 28 billion) by 2028, with compound annual growth remaining above 20%. Growth has been driven by rising household spending, the continued effects of the two-child policy, and increasing demand among parents for educational and entertainment experiences.
Chinese family entertainment brands have also begun to enter overseas markets. Southeast Asia has become a preferred destination due to cultural proximity, lower operating costs relative to Europe and the US, favorable regulatory conditions, and consumer demand that aligns well with Chinese operators’ offerings.
A Meland spokesperson said the Bangkok park will maintain the brand’s focus on inventive experiences and modern aesthetics while incorporating local cultural elements. The location will offer smart wristbands, professional childcare support, and a structured age-based play system designed to blend visual appeal, functionality, and social interaction.
Family theme parks have evolved beyond basic playground equipment and now serve as multifunctional spaces that combine entertainment, education, and leisure. Meland said it places strong emphasis on visual design, immersive storytelling, and child-centered play value and exploration. Its fairytale-inspired environments have received multiple international design awards.
According to Meland, the Bangkok location will highlight three major features:

We also share a mindset. We all love creating technologies and products that users can feel and experience.
<h3>36Kr: But 2023 wasn’t exactly a great year to launch a startup. What pushed you to do it anyway?</h3>
NG: Right, 2023 was the toughest year for investment. Everyone said it wasn’t the time to start a company. But when OpenAI fired the starting gun, it signaled the beginning of a new era. Everyone, big or small, was at the same starting line. No one had prior experience. That kind of uncertainty is the best environment for new species of companies.
We eventually summarized our approach into two principles: short-term viability with long-term exponential potential, and strong technical barriers where we have an advantage.
When you apply those filters, there aren’t many options left. We explored other categories but dropped them. Either competition was too intense, or the growth logic didn’t hold.
<h3>36Kr: So NAS became the final choice?</h3>
NG: Yes. NAS is relatively easy to reason through. Data will only become more valuable as all devices eventually need to connect to a central data hub. NAS already has the computing power, bandwidth, and storage to make it the ideal platform for on-device AI.
<h3>36Kr: How did you first identify NAS as a promising direction?</h3>
NG: I talked to many peers, and several recommended NAS. I’ve been a NAS user myself for over a decade, using products from brands like ZSpace, QNAP, and Synology. Another key insight was that many DJI users are also NAS users, which helped us recruit early testers and understand their pain points.
What surprised me was how counterintuitive the feedback was. When you ask NAS users if they need AI, almost everyone says no.
<h3>36Kr: I have to admit, I was surprised too when I first heard of an AI-powered NAS.</h3>
NG: I saw the same reaction on Reddit. Most people were adamant that NAS doesn’t need AI. Some long-time users even dismissed it as marketing hype.
But think about it: if your data keeps piling up and you can’t make use of it, it’s basically wasted. AI can help you organize, manage, and even create new value from that data. From a behavioral standpoint, that logic is sound. The early negativity was just noise.
<h3>36Kr: It seems video creators would be among the first to feel the pain of storage management. Could you give an example?</h3>
NG: Sure. Video creators rarely shoot footage in sequence, so their clips are scattered and disorganized. AI can automatically recognize, categorize, and align these materials—videos, images, even scripts—saving huge amounts of time in post-production.
Another common pain point is retrieving past footage. Previously, creators had to search through hard drives manually. Now, with natural language search, they can find clips instantly. The improvement in efficiency is enormous.
<h3>36Kr: So Zettlab enables video search through AI? Traditional NAS devices can’t do that?</h3>
NG: Exactly. Let’s say you’re a sports photographer covering a game. You shoot two hours of footage and need to produce a highlight reel fast. Normally, you’d have to watch all two hours. With natural language search, it takes less than a minute to locate and clip the highlights. That’s a major leap in productivity.

<h3>36Kr: Privacy is a major concern, especially for overseas users. How do you balance capability with data protection?</h3>
NG: That’s why we chose an edge AI architecture. All core functions run locally, without relying on the cloud. Internet connectivity is there only for convenience, say, when users want remote access while traveling.
All searching, recognition, and processing happen directly on the device. Even synchronization between devices is peer-to-peer, without passing through third-party servers. This ensures performance and privacy can coexist.
For most users, their data remains entirely on their own devices—secure, controlled, and trustworthy.
