While Tesla has enjoyed immense popularity in China, beating out the likes of notable competitors like BYD and Nio, a city electric vehicle (EV) developed by SGMW, a joint venture by SAIC Motor, Liuzhou Wuling Motors, and GM China, has outsold Tesla’s best-selling EV, the Model 3, nearly two to one in January of 2021.
SGMW sold 36,762 units of its tiny budget Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, compared to Tesla’s 21,589 Model 3 vehicles, becoming the world’s top-selling EV in the first month of the year, according to EV-Sales Blogspot.
One key advantage of the Wuling Hongguang Mini is its price, starting at just RMB 28,800 (USD 4,432), which has proven to be a popular choice for Chinese citizens living in big cities.
