CHINA BRIEF | NetEase tests karaoke app, competing with Tencent and Alibaba

Tencent’s WeSing, with over 100 million monthly active users, is the top app in this vertical.

Chinese gaming giant NetEase has been testing a new karaoke app, Yinjie, which means “Music Street” in Chinese since March 13, local media TechPlanet reported.

Yinjie allows users to sing along to karaoke, add audio and video effects, and create their own music videos. It also includes other functions like performance grading and social sharing. Yinjie is now available on major app stores, but logging in requires a test code, which the company posts on its QQ group and can easily be found online.

According to stats from data provider BigData-Research, in 2019, karaoke apps have amassed 300 million users with those born after 1995 accounting for 35.2%. Tencent’s WeSing, with over 100 million monthly active users, is the top app in this vertical. Alibaba’s Changya, launched last year, has also gained popularity its unique virtual instrument feature.
