Each user on average displayed the health code 25 times since being launched.

WeChat on Tuesday said that 800 million people have used their health code, which is built inside the app in the form of a mini-program, since it was developed in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, KrASIA learned from WeChat’s 10th anniversary live event.

The location-based health code has been a required instrument to verify the health status of individual citizens, to register visits in public places, as well as to track whether they have been close to infected persons. People in China have been asked to display their code, to scan it at venues, or to use it while taking ride-hailing services.

So far, the code has been displayed more than 20 billion times, according to WeChat, roughly 25 times per user. Tencent’s blockbuster social media app last reported an active user base of 1.2 billion.
