In China’s first-tier cities, market penetration of ride-hailing services exceeded 70% as of Q1 of 2019.

Online ride-hailing services accounted for 36.2% of the total taxi traffic in China in 2020, according to the sharing economy report 2021 published today by The State Information Center.

The 36.2% share represents a considerable increase compared to the 16.6% reported in 2016, when online ride-hailing started to take off in the country, though it is 0.3% lower than in 2019, as many cities suspended ride-hailing services last year during the pandemic, said the report.

Lead by transportation service providers like Didi Chuxing, the market penetration rate of online ride-hailing services exceeded 70% as of the first quarter of 2019 in China’s top-tier cities, yet it only averaged 20% in third and lower-tier cities, according to data from research firm Frost & Sullivan, as reported by Jiemian.
