Hey. Brady here.
You may have heard that Viya, one of China’s top livestreamers—possibly the most successful streamer—was slapped with a fine of USD 210 million for evading taxes.
That is, in professional financial parlance, a ton of cash!
The impact on Viya’s personal finances aside, there will no doubt be an impact on the business of Taobao. Alibaba specifically takes on top livestreamers to sell things, and Viya is one of the high-caliber streamers that operates on Taobao Live, where she has nearly 100 million followers.
But the tax fines may change those business arrangements. For now, Viya’s social media presence has been scrubbed, and we doubt she’ll be appearing on any livestreams anytime soon.
Mengyuan and Jiaxing worked on this story to unpack the implications of Viya’s fine. You can read their article here.
